'Coming To.'

by Simon O'Corra

Jim is a man, who in early middle age, begins to recognise that he is an object of desire for a great many men both young and old. The novel traces the burgeoning realisation, of his identity as a gay bear, his developing love for himself and his own body and the deepening love he feels for another man, Aiden. The novel traces a time in Jim's life when he becomes  a positive thinking gay man, thanks to a process of self development which also leads to him finding the man of his dreams.

Jim falls back into his luxurious office chair after this whirlwind exchange and he is disquieted; he is still flaky when someone challenges his new community. He closes his eyes, and thinks for a few moments about the discussion. He realises more and more that he is part of a culture which reveres the hairy body beautiful, and heaven knows he has that in abundance. He is beginning to lose his inhibitions, but it is still hard sometimes for him. Before his Eureka! moment back in the Spring, he had just thought of himself for years as the fat hairy bloke. The one who sat in the prissy gay bar and faced endless rejection, all those skinny twinks and muscle Marys, looking down their noses at him, just the same as Mel does. Jim often is surprised at how many gay men are dismissive of other gay men and of any kind of difference really.

Coming To..... is a wonderfully written novel and an amazing read. The reader is drawn in immediately, making him feel as though he is present during all the events in Jim’s life and is kept engaged throughout the work until the very last tantalising sentence.
